Kia Ora Welcome!

The local organising committee warmly invites you to join us for...

Mā te kōrero, kia mārama. Mā te mārama, kia mahi tahi. Mā te mahi tahi, kia mōhio.
The 6th International Symposium on the Ocean in a High CO₂ World

Moving from Understanding to Action using Multiple Knowledge Systems

Held in Wellington, New Zealand, at Tākina Convention & Exhibition Centre. Join researchers and other thought leaders from across the globe to explore the impacts of rising CO₂ and help shape future ocean science solutions. Experience Wellington through ecosanctuary tours, SCUBA dives in Taputeranga Marine Reserve, and a wide range of technical workshops.

Ngā Uri o Taranaki Whānui have generously gifted the Symposium's name in recognition of the partnerships that have collectively developed this symposium.

About the Symposium

Ocean acidification remains a central theme of the symposium series. This edition will also expand to consider other ocean climate impacts, such as ocean warming and deoxygenation, particularly in a multiple-driver context. Research on marine carbon dioxide removal interventions, which are suggested to mitigate climate change and ocean acidification, will also be a key part of the conference.

Themes

  • Beyond tipping points - translating science to action
  • Global-driven changes in biodiversity and ecosystem resilience
  • Multiple stressors' effects on marine organisms
  • Ocean-based solutions
  • Technological advances in marine climate change research
  • The modulating role of time - from short-term variability to evolution
  • Working across knowledge systems in a high-CO₂ world

Workshops, Meetings & Training

There will be over 20 free workshops covering a wide range of topics, including marine carbon dioxide removal (mCDR), learning across knowledge systems, policy engagement, integrating ocean carbon observations and models, experimental design, and biodiversity in a changing ocean. Workshop registration will open in late February. Express your interest here to be notified.
